Teens Dared to Follow their Dreams at Leadership Conference
On May 25th, Rhode Island students came out to the University of Rhode Island’s Kingston campus for a day of inspiration, information and empowerment – the 2nd Annual Rhode Island Dare to Dream Student Leadership Conference.
It was quite an experience for the more than 300 students, teachers and professionals in attendance. Students were inspired to reach for their dreams, whatever they might be … whether it is college, technical school or independent living.
Keynote speaker LeDerrick Horne shared his own personal story about growing up with learning challenges and his rise to a successful career as an entrepreneur and inspirational speaker.
The entire Dare to Dream day was a student led and student focused. Each workshop and break out session was presented for students and with student input. Some topics included student advocacy, understanding personal strengths and challenges, how to be a young leader, healthy habit/healthy living, healthcare transition, and apartment hunting.
The workshops were hands-on and full of activity. There was Dress for Success Fashion Show, Dance with the Johnston Stars perfomance, role playing scenarios to explain different abilities, and hands-on activities to act out problems teens face each day.
A big THANK YOU goes out to everyone who made this special day so successful especially RIPIN partners from the Department of Health, Rhode Island Department of Education, The University of Rhode Island, and all the amazing teen leaders in Rhode Island.
